Give some thought to the Canadian Goose. How in the world do these rather compact birds load enough insulation upon their hides to avoid freezing, yet keep light enough to become airborne? The answer is goose down; fine fibers below their coarse outer feathers which capture pockets of air and serve as nature’s ideal insulation. Despite the eons spent messing with everything from animal hides to wadded newspaper, we still haven't managed to develop a fabric that combines lightweight comfort and world-class insulation the way that goose down can.
